Born To Serve

“Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant.”
Mark 10:43 (NIV)

The Belmond Copacabana Palace Hotel is the most famous and luxurious hotel in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is considered South America’s premier hotel, having received the rich and famous for the past 80 years. It faces the Copacabana beach. In an interview the manager was asked what is the most important quality or characteristic required in anyone who wants to work at the hotel? She said that a willingness to serve is paramount—having an attitude of service. The guests of the hotel are to be pampered and made to feel welcome.

In a separate interview for a job in one of the hotel’s restaurants, a potential employee was asked why he wanted to work at the hotel? His response was that he was born to serve! As Christians, we too, have been born to serve. In our new birth in Christ we have been chosen for service. To serve one another and all of humanity. “You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’” (Galatians 5:13-14).

One of life’s greatest satisfactions and a sense of fulfillment comes when we serve others. When we look out for the interests of others and not just ourselves. (Philippians 2:4-5). Jesus has the attitude or mindset of service. And his image is being formed in us! “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:45).

We may never get to experience the service and luxury of the Copacabana Palace Hotel, but even if we did, it will not compare to the place that Jesus promised has already been prepared for us. (1 Corinthians 2:9).

Prayer
Father in Heaven, we sometimes marvel at the things of this world that men and women have produced. Your instruction to us is to set our minds on the things above where Christ is, and not on the temporary things of this life. Please enable us to focus on what you have accomplished, are doing now, and will do for us in the coming ages.
Amen
