Rooted In Love

“May your roots go down deep into the soil of God’s marvelous love.”
Ephesians 3:17 (NLT)

I was lost in the maze of hospital corridors, so to control my rising panic I stopped to read a prominent poster displayed on the wall. Under the picture of a tree in full leaf it stated, “Hospital volunteers are like trees. They come in all shapes and sizes, are sturdy and reliable, and give a sense of stability and continuity. You can depend on a tree.” For a few moments I forgot about being lost as I pondered that statement. I started to think, not about hospital volunteers, but about my life as a Christian, and I had to ask myself, “How can I, like a tree, grow to become sturdy, reliable and dependable?”

I knew that the potential of a tree seedling depended on the development of a strong root system in the soil to provide stability and essential nutrients for future growth. A carefully placed stake, that wouldn’t restrict growth, was normally strapped to a young sapling to provide support and strength in the early stages of development.

As I stood in front of the poster deep in thought, a scripture came to mind from the book of Ephesians. In chapter 3, verses 17-19 it says, “And I pray that Christ will be more and more at home in your hearts as you trust in Him. May your roots go down deep into the soil of God’s marvellous love. And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep His love really is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is so great you will never fully understand it. Then you will be filled with the fullness of life and power that comes from God.”

There was the answer to my question. The more I trust in Jesus, the deeper my roots penetrate into the soil of God’s love. God blesses me with understanding for my development, and the nutrients I need are provided through the fullness of God. Psalm 29:11 adds, “The Lord gives His people strength.”

As I turned away from the poster I knew that with God’s love and support I would, like a tree, steadily grow to become sturdy, reliable and dependable. What an incredible blessing.

Prayer
Thank you, Father, that through your deep love for us you provide everything we need for our growth and development for the ultimate benefit of other people. In Jesus’ name.
Amen
