Our Inheritance

“and giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light.”
Colossians 1:12 (NIV)

When you hear about an inheritance, the subject of inheritance tax comes to mind. What is it and are you required to pay it? According to the HMRC, Inheritance Tax is usually paid on an estate when somebody dies. Some people look for ways to avoid paying Inheritance Tax, or as it is also called, Death Duty.

As Christians we have received an inheritance on which we do not have to worry about paying Inheritance Tax. God, the Father, has qualified us to share in that inheritance.

Jesus, the Son, has secured our inheritance by his life, death, resurrection and ascension, making us co-heirs with him. Romans 8:17 tell us, “Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.”

The Holy Spirit guarantees our inheritance. “The Spirit is God’s guarantee that he will give us the inheritance he promised and that he has purchased us to be his own people. He did this so we would praise and glorify him.” (Ephesians 1:14 NLT).

The inheritance that we have received also includes “every spiritual blessing in Christ” (Ephesians 1:3), and eternal life (1 John 5:11-13). In reality that means that we are richer than the richest person or family on earth! All that is required of us is to believe or trust in, and accept the gift from our triune God, giving him joyful thanks, praising and glorifying him.

Father in heaven, thank you for having qualified us to share in this amazing inheritance. Please enable us to fix our eyes and thoughts on Jesus who has secured it for us, and to walk in the Spirit who is the guarantor of your promise.
