Jesus Is Working For Us In Heaven

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”
Romans 8:28 (NIV)

This year Thursday 29th May will be Ascension Day, the day when Christians commemorate the ascension of Jesus Christ into heaven. The next major event for Him will be when He returns in glory as King of kings and Lord of lords. What is He doing in the meantime? He is certainly very busy engaged in some very important activities for our benefit. How exciting!  Let’s consider three of them here.

We know that Jesus wants us to be with Him and one of His responsibilities is to prepare a place for us in His heavenly home. John 14:2 says, “There are many rooms in my Father’s house…I am going there to prepare a place for you.”  When He returns it will be on the clouds in great glory. At that time He will take us up into the clouds so that we may be forever with Him. He is now preparing that place for us.

A second very important one is to act as the Mediator between ourselves and the Father when we sin.  Jesus is busy in heaven pleading for us as our defence lawyer – some translations call Him our Advocate.  “If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. … If anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defence – Jesus Christ, the Righteous One”  (1 John 1:8, 2:1)  He had been human Himself. He knows what it is like even though He was without sin. He took the burden of our sins when He died as our sacrifice on the cross. Most emphatically, Jesus is constantly at work in heaven acting as our Advocate there before the Father.

Finally, Jesus is constantly adding people to His church. We are His body and He is its Head. It is through His body that His gospel of salvation is being proclaimed. The church is daily adding to its numbers and its work is directed by its Head, Jesus. Read it in Ephesians 1:23, “[The church] is His body, the fullness of Him who fills everything in every way.”

Let’s summarise. Jesus is very busy. He is preparing our place to be with Him forever, He is interceding for us before the Father’s throne and He is using us to proclaim His gospel and thereby bring more people to repentance and salvation. Yes, Jesus is very busy between His ascension and His return.

Lord Jesus, we desire so much to be with You. We thank you that you also want us to be with You and that You are working in heaven to bring it about. We look forward to Your return, when we shall be taken up into the clouds to be with You for ever.  In Your holy name we pray.
