The Nearness of You

“I say of the holy people who are in the land, ‘They are the noble ones in whom is all my delight.’”
Psalm 16:3 (NIV)

All was quiet in my ménage; Ella Fitzgerald was crooning one of my favourite songs on the radio, a song called The Nearness Of You *. The lyrics are gentle and romantic.  I had just been reading about God’s great love for me.  I suddenly realised that the words applied conversely could reflect what God thinks of me.  I know He delights in me just as the song says, Psalm 16:3 declares. “I say of the holy people who are in the land, ‘They are the noble ones in whom is all my delight.’”  I don’t know if God has ‘dreams’, but I do know He has big plans for His children (Jeremiah 29:11).

Paul understood how much God wants us to draw near to Him, “(for the law made nothing perfect), and a better hope is introduced, by which we draw near to God.” ( Hebrews 7:19)  God wants us to stay close to Him.  The apostle James wrote, “Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.” (James 4:7-9)

When we are close to Him, He gives us the strength and comfort to carry on in the ‘nights’ of life, the dark times of trial and trauma—He is there holding us close to Him, bearing our pain.  Timothy exhorts us to hold on to the ‘true life’—“And in this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.” 1 Timothy 6:19. Jesus is the way, the truth and the life—this is who we hold on to in a state of nearness.

Upon reflection the song has risen higher in my estimation—from now on I will think of Abba, my loving Father in heaven, every time I hear it.

Loving Father, you never change, you are the same forever, and even though you are the great God of the universe you have time for me – always.  Thank you, Abba, for your nearness—may I never stray from it.

*The Nearness Of You

It’s not the pale moon that excites me
That thrills and delights me, oh no
It’s just the nearness of you

It isn’t your sweet conversation
That brings this sensation, oh no
It’s just the nearness of you

When you’re in my arms and I feel you so close to me
All my wildest dreams came true

I need no soft lights to enchant me
If you’ll only grant me the right
To hold you ever so tight
And to feel in the night the nearness of you
