Hearts Strengthened By Grace

“It is good for your hearts to be strengthened by grace.”
Hebrews 13:9 (NIV UK)

One of the benefits of participating in the bread and the wine of the Lord’s Supper is that our hearts are strengthened by God’s grace.

In our mixed up and busy lives it is easy to forget the grace of God. The writer of the book of Hebrews was anxious lest believers take the grace of God for granted, as if it were an insignificant event. One of the strongest verses in the New Testament discusses this: do not be like someone “who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified them, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace” (10:29). This is a reference to the sacrifice of Jesus, who “suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone” (2:9). As we take the communion of the bread and the wine we “proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes” (1 Corinthians 11:26).

The sacrament of the bread and the wine, which was instituted by Jesus himself (Matthew 26:26), is all about grace. It brings into focus the new covenant of grace.

When we eat the bread and drink the wine, no matter how often we do it, we are involved in and participating in “the grace of the Lord”, which was poured out on us “abundantly” (1 Timothy 1:14).

Take the time to pause. Be refreshed spiritually. Come to the Lord’s Table and let your heart be strengthened by his grace.

Thank you, eternal Father, that Jesus instituted the new covenant, and for the sacrament of the bread and wine. Help us please to be strengthened and renewed by your grace, not just when we participate in those elements, but also every day through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
