Hard To Be Humble

“Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart…”
Matthew 11:29 (NIV)

A song was released many years ago entitled “O lord it’s hard to be humble when you’re perfect in every way”. A firm favourite, I would imagine at a Pharisee karoke night! Humility not being their thing—note the example in the temple of the Pharisee and tax collector recorded in Luke 18:9-12.

This humourous ditty implies that humility only comes when you’re less than perfect. Is this so? Winston Churchill was once informed that a certain person was very humble upon which Winston replied, “He’s got a lot to be humble about………”

So does perfection mean no need for humility? I talk in jest. Jesus was and is perfect, and he is the paragon of humility. He divested Himself of His glory, majesty and equality with the Father, to take on the mantle of a mere human being.(Philippians 2:5-8)  He got down on His knees and performed the most menial task, usually reserved for the lowest slave in the house, washing His disciples dirty feet at the last supper. To top it all, our Lord humbly allowed Himself to be beaten and battered, scourged and crucified, to pay for mankind’s sin. Philippians 2:8 says he “humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross!”

As very imperfect humans, we do indeed have a lot to be humble about, but look to the perfect example of our Lord and Saviour.  Jesus’ whole ministry was one of humble service to all.

“Take my yoke upon you” he says, “and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart.” (Mathew 11:29)

Thank you, Father, for the perfectly humble example of Your Son, Jesus Christ.  Lead us by the Holy Spirit to perfection, so we too may be truly humble, as You are. In Jesus’ name we give thanks.
