Life In The Spirit

Live by the Spirit’”
Galatians 5:16 (NIV UK)

Stay active spiritually.

Paul was concerned lest the Galatians lost touch with the Spirit of Christ who dwells in them. Other New Testament writers, like the Apostle John, had similar concerns. “Those who obey his commands live in him”, he wrote in 1 John 3:24, “and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us. We know it by the Spirit he gave us”. The believer’s life is an expression of Christ’s Spirit within us.

Whilst on vacation I read a report by a German researcher about how inactivity might reduce oxygen to the brain. It suggested that holidays to sweltering destinations could affect negatively how we function mentally. Too much heat and resultant dehydration may limit our capacity to think. And the associated inactivity just makes matter worse. A cheerful thought, isn’t it?

Sometimes believers choose to have a break from spiritual life. They feel they want a holiday from faith. At other times weeks may go by and we have not thought much about God or Jesus Christ. It’s as if we’ve taken a vacation from God without realizing it. Maybe we could draw a parallel here to the research mentioned above. Is there a danger? Does spiritual inactivity affect our capacity to express the Spirit of Christ? The answer seems obvious, does it not?

Be active in the fruits of the Spirit, Paul tells Christians (Galatians 5:22). Don’t let the life the Spirit imparts dry up within us. Pray, study, talk with other believers, go to church, sing praises to God. Don’t neglect your spiritual life.

“Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit” (5:25).

Prayer
Help us, Father, please, to live in the Spirit, to engage in the fruits of the Spirit, and to be active spiritually in Christ.  In Jesus’ name.
Amen

Hello James, many thanks for this article. It’s sparked all sorts of ideas in my mind about living in the Spirit… I think I may be “borrowing” this article for future sermons!
    Kind Regards
