Resist

“Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.”
James 4:7 (NKJV)

In Romans 6:14 we are told, “sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.”  So then why is it that at times sin does seem to have dominion over us?

Recently, while pondering this puzzle, the thought that came to my mind in large capital letters was, RESIST!

Jesus lived a perfect life and, although He never sinned, He was severely tempted by the devil.  Read the story of the temptation in Mathew 4:1-11. Jesus always resisted sin, and the Holy Spirit gave Him the strength that He needed!  When we accept Jesus as our Lord and Saviour we receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.  Just as Jesus was tempted to sin, which is to walk in the lust of the flesh and not in the Spirit, so will we be.  James 4:7 tells us, “Submit yourselves therefore to God.  Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”  When we are tempted to sin, we need to resist it.  That is our part, and the strength that we need will be given to us by the Holy Spirit.

None of us do this perfectly but we are still loved by our Heavenly Father.  Even the Apostle Paul wrote, “what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I.” and, “who shall deliver me…? Jesus Christ our Lord…” (Romans 7:19 & 25)  When we have Jesus we have the gift of eternal life which we do not earn by our performance!

We have been given a new mind, which is to become like the mind that is in Christ Jesus to resist evil and temptation.  Philippians 2:5 says, “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus.”

Prayer
Father God, thank you for sending Jesus to pay the price of all our sin so that we could have direct fellowship with you and help to resist evil.
Amen
