The Race of Life

“…let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.”
Hebrews 12:1 (NLT)

The Winter Olympics are being held this year in Russia for the first time, between 7-23 February.

Our spiritual race is like a marathon of which everyone who finishes is a winner, but it is a race that is a lifetime long and, once we start, no-one can stop us unless we let them.

We don’t run on our own.  God is with us all the way.  As Paul tells us, “the Lord stood with me and gave me strength…and will bring me safely into His heavenly kingdom.” (2 Timothy 4:17,18)  And Proverbs 4:11-12 says, “I will teach you wisdom’s ways and lead you in straight paths.  When you walk, you won’t be held back; when you run, you won’t stumble.”

It is not necessarily a question of speed.  Ecclesiastes 9:11 tells us “The fastest runner doesn’t always win the race…”

There is usually a prize at the end of a race and ours is Eternal Life.  We are told in 1 Corinthians 9:25-27 that “All athletes are disciplined in their training.  They do it to win a prize that will fade away, but we do it for an eternal prize.”

Spiritual disciplines such as prayer and Bible study, figure prominently in our race of life.  Paul says, “So I run with purpose in every step.  I am not just shadow boxing.  I discipline my body like an athlete, training it to do what it should…” (1 Corinthians 9:27)

Staying focused and keeping our eyes on the goal is important, as we see in Proverbs 4:25, “Look straight ahead, and fix your eyes on what lies before you.  Mark out a straight path for your feet; stay on the safe path.  Don’t get side-tracked; keep your feet from following evil.” And “We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the Champion who initiates and perfects our faith.”  (Hebrews 12:2)

Prayer
Thank you, Father, for giving us the opportunity to take part in this race of life, and with your help we know we can win.  In Jesus’ name we pray.
Amen
