Tension Release

You’ve carried those burdens long enough.”
Zephaniah 3:18  (The Message)

Do you ever feel uptight?

The other day my wife was using a sewing machine. I was watching what she was doing, and I asked her what one of the controls was for. She said “That is the tension release button”. I thought, “I could do with one of those. If only I had a tension release button!”

In one sense I do. When everything is getting to me, which it does more often than I care to admit, I try to find a quiet moment. Sometimes I need to create it in my mind, at other times I go to a place away from the immediate hustle and bustle, and I pray. I pray that God would give me some peace and help me face whatever the issue is, or the issues are, without feeling so stressed. Occasionally I sing a hymn, or at least as many of the words of the hymn that I can remember.

In that way for a brief period of time I rest in the Lord. It relaxes me. The problem might not go away, but the tension is released.

When Zechariah wrote to the Israelite captives, his desire was to give them hope in their desperate situation. Don’t worry, he explained to them, let go of the weight of your concerns, real though they may be. It’s time to rest in the Lord.

When we take our burdensome problems to the Lord, He helps us feel less stressed. Christ said that all those who are weary and heavy burdened can come to Him, and He will give them rest (Matthew 11:28).

He does give us that rest. He helps release the tension. Go to Him.

Gracious Lord, thank you that we can bring our worries and concerns to you, and that you comfort us and help us to feel less tense. In Jesus’ name.
