Shadow Replaced By Light

“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil;”
Psalm 23:4 (NKJV)

Bereavement and loss stalk humanity – that is a fact none can escape. It is always painful, traumatic and heart-breaking when it occurs.  The end of a life is sobering—respects are shown and questions arise in the minds of those who do not know Jesus Christ.  Can this be all there is?  What is the point of life if in death we have finality?  Where is my loved one right now?  Is there such a thing as glory?

We see nature and often call it glorious, e.g. we call the colours of autumn glorious, but is nature the only aspect of glory available to man?  As the sun filters through the trees shedding their gold and russet leaves to carpet the ground, shadows are formed.  Children chase their shadows – they cannot shake them off.

Until Jesus Christ rose from the dead, man had a shadow he could not shake off.  Romans 3:23 tells us that we have all sinned and therefore incur the death penalty, i.e. the grave (Romans 6:23).  However, by God’s wonderful grace we have received pardon. In Psalm 23, King David poetically described us walking though the valley of the shadow of death where we are assured of protection by the shepherd.  Our shepherd is Jesus Christ and He has overcome death. In the full knowledge of Christ’s victory over death, Paul challenges death, ‘where is your sting?’ (1 Corinthians 15:55-56)

Be of good cheer, the victory has been won! Paul tells us, “But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1Corinthians 15:57)  The time is now, the shadow of death that has haunted humanity since the time of Adam has been vanquished, death has been conquered – God be praised!

Great God, we are comforted by you removing death’s shadow.  Thank you, Jesus, for overcoming death and vanquishing its shadow forever.
