High Expectations

“For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed.”
Roman 8:19 (NKJV)

Sitting in the outdoor enclosure of a restaurant recently enjoying a meal, we were entertained by a number of very cheeky sparrows hopping ever closer to our plates. Eventually we looked up to see five sparrows sitting in a row on the back of the empty seat next to us watching our every bite with eager expectation. Their intense sense of anticipation for what they expected to receive was palpable. Nothing we did was going to deter them from their desire and intention to achieve that for which they were waiting.

A dictionary definition of expectation is the act or state of looking forward or anticipating. And eager is defined as being keen or ardent in desire or feeling; impatiently longing. Put together we have an ardent desire or yearning anticipation of a coming event. In the case the sparrows their greedy anticipation of food was enough to keep them trying to get ever closer to their goal.

What an amazing scripture it is in Romans that tells us that all of creation – the whole world around us – waits for the children of God to be revealed. That is a very powerful expectation indeed but what does it really mean? Are we not all children of God already? What remains to be revealed about that?

The only other place in the Bible where the same phrase is found is in Philippians 1:20 in which Paul says, “I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death.” Paul was speaking of the intense desire he had that no matter what happened to him in life or death, it would be Christ who was revealed. Humanly speaking he had to step out in faith that his courage would not fail him in the face of the trial he was experiencing. In the process, he shows us exactly what it means to have the children of God revealed.

Since we are all children of God, the explanation lies in the revelation. The whole of creation waits with impatient longing and anticipation for the time when Jesus will be fully revealed in all of us. There’s a praise song that uses the words, ‘Jesus, God’s righteousness revealed.’ It is Christ living in us that reveals to the world around us that we are indeed the children of God. Just like the sparrows eagerly awaiting their reward with the food, we too need to be eagerly expecting, earnestly striving and looking forward with a fervent desire to being a part of that revelation.

Dear Father, just as your creation waits in eager expectation for the time when your righteousness will be fully revealed, we pray that we will have sufficient courage now and always that Christ may be exalted in and through us. In Jesus’ name.
