Larger Than Life

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.
John 10:10 (NIV)

Recently I heard someone described as being ‘larger than life’. The phrase is peculiar; how can someone actually be larger than life? It is, of course, a term describing the personality of an individual. One dictionary definition states, ‘someone who is larger-than-life has a very strong or lively personality that impresses people very much.’

God is the life-giver. We know this by studying Genesis. To have access to life in a larger form, i.e. eternal life, we needed God’s grace. In Romans 5:17 we learn that mankind eradicated the promise of eternal life by sinning, not only in the garden of Eden, but throughout the generations. The giver of life, Jesus, came to earth, lived in human form and died a cruel death in order to redeem humanity. He explains this in John 10:10, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. This fulness of life is for eternity.

Can you imagine a life bathed in the incredible light of God’s presence? Can you imagine a life free of pain, poverty and evil? Can you imagine a life of joy, praise and exuberance? This is God’s glory that we are promised through the coming of our Saviour and his resurrection—this will be ‘larger than life.’

Loving Father, as your children we praise your name. Thank you that through Jesus we will indeed be able to praise and glorify eternally. Thy kingdom come.
