Rely On God’s Grace

We have done so, not relying on worldly wisdom but on God’s grace.”
2 Corinthians 1:12 (NIV UK)

Paul saw his life as a daily participation in God’s grace.

Of course, there was the bigger picture of God’s purpose and grace that God had in mind before time began (2 Timothy 1:9), but also God was with him every day in Christ Jesus as Paul followed the lead of the Spirit. His spirituality involved the little details as well as the grand designs.

In 2 Corinthians Paul is discussing a change of travel plans that he had committed to God in prayer. To Paul God was there all the time for him to talk to, and in that way Paul could “pray continually” (1 Thessalonians 5:17). The grace of God was a constant thought in his mind.

What about us in 2014? Will we put God’s grace at the front of our minds? Will grace be our constant reference point during our daily routine? Will it dominate our relationships? Will it affect our plans and all that we do?

Grace also helps us stand up and be counted as believers. The writer Ernest Hemingway is credited with that phrase, “Courage is grace under pressure”. No matter how difficult it may be to stick to the choices of grace, let’s choose them anyway. All your friends are taking drugs: refuse to join in. You are tempted to have a sexual relationship outside of marriage: resist. Even though finances are hard, still be honest. When others at work are rubbishing your faith, don’t deny who Jesus is. Every day is a courageous walk as we follow our gracious Lord.

In 2014 let’s step out in God’s grace.

Almighty Father, thank you that you surround us every day with your grace. Help us in this coming year to rely totally on your grace in everything that we do. In his name.
