Pleasure and Purpose

“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth….. And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good.”
Genesis 1:1, 31 (KJV)

Sometimes we put lots of time and effort into creating an elaborate meal with beautiful desserts for our guests, which seems to be gone in an instant. We always knew, though, that this would be the case. We did it because we were getting pleasure from creating it and from the pleasure our guests gained from eating it.

God put much thought into this wonderful creation in which we live. It’s elaborate and beautiful, but also won’t last long (in terms of eternity). He knew from the beginning that it was only temporary. He got pleasure from creating it. He also gets pleasure from our enjoyment, and from our awe and wonder at its majesty and intricacies.  If we thank our hosts for a lovely meal, surely we should thank our Heavenly Father for the wonderful world He created for us to live in, even if it is temporary.

With regard to purpose, hosts invite people not simply to feed them but to foster good relationships with them and between those sharing the meal. God is also in the ‘business’ of fostering good relationships with his children and between His people who are enjoying His creation together.

Prayer
Dear Father, thank You for this amazing creation in which we live. There is so much in it to give us pause for thought, to inspire awe at Your creative abilities, as well as to teach us all sorts of lessons about You. And a great big thank You for forging relationships with us and for all the work you do on building them stronger and deeper. Please help us to respond by doing what we can to foster good relationships, not only with You, but also with each other. Thank You.
Amen
