You Are Never Alone

“You have hedged me behind and before, and laid your hand upon me.”
Psalm 139:5 (NKJV)

Christmas and the New Year are times of family gatherings, parties and celebrations.  But for many they can be times of loneliness and regret; times when we become aware of just how much we miss the benefit of, or feel the absence of, friends and family.  But there is one who never leaves us.  He is so close he surrounds us and his love for us is such that he puts us at the centre of his life.  That one is God whose love extended to offering his own Son in our stead to redeem us from our sins.

This is not human love of which we speak.  This needed the love of God, since only that love could fully provide the sacrifice necessary for our salvation.  That love is expressed in Jesus who called his disciples friends, and when we become disciples we also become friends of Jesus. But what does all this mean, and what is the value of this friendship?

Firstly, it means we are never alone, we have a friend who is close by, actually holding our hand.  Psalm 73:23 says, “Nevertheless I am continually with You; You hold me by my right hand.”

Secondly, this friend is forever.  “…For He Himself has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.’” (Hebrews 13:5)

Thirdly, there is nothing that this friend cannot deal with in the world to help us in our hour of need.  Read the comforting words of Jesus in John 16:33, “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace.  In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”

We are facing a new year and no one knows what it will bring, but we have the confidence that someone who is greater than the world is holding our hand and will guide us through, if we trust in him.

Prayer
Father in heaven, thank you for your closeness and for the promise that because you will never leave us we will never be alone.
Amen
