What Can You Give God?

“Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness.”
Romans 6:13 (NIV)

I’m sure nearly everyone has someone for whom they find it impossible to buy a gift. Maybe it’s a teenager who doesn’t like anything you suggest. Or perhaps it’s a cantankerous uncle who complains about anything you get him. What do you give to the rich relative that has everything anyway?

This would undoubtedly be a problem for the Royal Family, as it’s said Princess Diana found out at her first Christmas with them. Generously, she bought cashmere and other luxury items for her in-laws, only to discover that the key to success in royal present-giving is that every present should be an inexpensive “joke gift” – the cheaper the better. The trouble was no one had bothered to inform her.

That got me thinking, “What could I give to God?” If you had to come up with a gift to give to God, what would it be? After all, what can you give someone who says, “I have no need of a bull from your stall or of goats from your pens, for every animal of the forest is mine, and the cattle on a thousand hills. I know every bird in the mountains, and the insects in the fields are mine. If I were hungry I would not tell you, for the world is mine, and all that is in it.” (Psalm 50:9-12)  The simple fact is, there is no material gift that I could possibly give to God that He does not already own, and frankly He doesn’t need. So what can I possibly give God? Has he informed us? Surely it’s not a joke gift?

Well there is one really important thing we all have that we could give to God. And that is, we could give Him ourselves. We could give Him every part of lives and say, “take me, save me, transform me.” God graciously gives us the choice to either offer Him our lives, or to keep ourselves to ourselves and not share it with Him at all. What will we do?  If you have made a list of the presents you are going to give at this time of year, why not put yourself at the top. You are just the gift God has always wanted.

Father, what can I give and what can I bring to you the Creator of the universe? Only the sacrifice of a broken, thankful heart. Help me to offer up my life to you in spirit and in truth, and surrender all of me to all of you.
