Long Walk to Freedom

“I will walk about in freedom, for I have sought out your precepts.”
Psalm 119:45 (NIV)

The date was December the 5th and the sad news of Nelson Mandela’s death is resounding across the globe.  The world’s newsrooms are buzzing with people who had known him and tributes come flooding in.  A man of peace and reconciliation, making significant headway in transforming South Africa from a nation rent with hate to a nation of tolerance, freedom and peace.  One representative of the South African government paying tribute said ‘his long walk to freedom has ended.’

The thought struck me that in fact Mandela’s long walk to freedom has not ended, but has just begun.  Jesus promised in Matthew 5:9 that the peacemakers will be blessed for they will be called the children of God.  The apostle James heard Jesus say this and later he repeated, “Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness.” (James 3:18)  Nelson Mandela had many reasons to come out of prison embittered, having been wrongly imprisoned for 27 years, but instead, he became one of the world’s greatest statesmen propounding and urging peace and rapprochement.  One of his many profound quotations is, “Real leaders must be ready to sacrifice all for the freedom of their people.”

As Christians, our leader Jesus Christ sacrificed all and died cruelly at the hands of man, for those same men and for all humanity.  Jesus will keep His promise to Nelson Mandela, whose long walk to freedom has entered a new chapter – one of glory with his Saviour.

Father, we thank you for the life of this great leader – an example to all.  We pray for continued peace in South Africa.  We long for the Prince of Peace to return to restore peace to this war torn planet.
