Illuminations

“Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, ‘I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.’”
John 8:12 (NKJV)

Rare and ancient books often contain fabulous “illuminations”, or illustrations—hand-painted with liquid gold and vibrant reds, blues and greens. These illustrations ‘illuminate’ the text, or ‘shed a light’ on their meaning to help people understand what is written there. Jesus, the light of the world, was the great illuminator, and his famous parables help us understand the word, or text, of scripture. In Luke 24:45 it says, “And He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures.”

We used to live in Lancashire, fairly near to Blackpool, home of the famous autumn Illuminations. The streets would be lined with fantastic lights of every colour and shape, making pictures, flashing, moving and exploding in exciting patterns. People would come by the busload from miles around to see them and be amazed. The wise men travelled for weeks and months to see Jesus—“A light to lighten the Gentiles”, as it says in Luke 2:32 (KJV).

Streets this month are lighting up with Christmas illuminations. The dazzling lights are not there primarily to cheer people up, or to make the streets beautiful, but to light up and point to the Gospel message—that Jesus came to bring light to a world darkened by sin, and to show the way to salvation through his redemption and by God’s grace (Luke 1:79; Acts 13:47).

Prayer
Help us to see through the tinsel and gaudy lights, Father in Heaven, to the real Light of the world—your son, Jesus, who came to bring us out of darkness and to ‘open our understanding’ to the redemption we have through Him.
Amen
