God Gives Grace in His Time

Third of a Series

“Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”
Hebrews 4:16 (NIV)

Every couple of months in the town where we live there is a combined “Parish Praise” service for the churches in the area.  My wife and I like to attend this service, and went along as usual in September 2008 when we were expecting the birth of our daughter in December.  The service is held in a school only about five minutes walk from our house, but on this occasion my wife really struggled to get there.  Her legs were very swollen and she could barely walk.  And within a few minutes of the service starting she was in a lot of pain and wanted to go home.  So we went out into the foyer and an usher showed her to a comfortable chair.  Amazingly he informed us there was a midwife in the congregation, and it turned out she worked in the delivery suite at the local hospital.

The midwife took one look at my wife and said I ought to take her to hospital to be checked, then phoned ahead to let them know we were coming.  I thought it was quite inconvenient—I had planned to cut down a tree in the garden, as it was a sunny autumn day!  But when we reached the hospital it quickly became clear the situation was more serious than we’d realised.  The consultant obstetrician was already there waiting for us—not something we’d necessarily have expected on a Sunday.  Within minutes they’d begun monitoring my wife and moved her to an individual room closest to the nurses’ station.  It turned out she had very high blood pressure and suspected severe pre-eclampsia.  If the midwife hadn’t seen my wife when she did it might have been too late.  But as we will see throughout this series, God was giving us a blessing through His grace at just the right time.  He knew what we needed.  And it was a powerful lesson for me:  God always gives His grace in His time and His way.

In the ultimate act of grace, Romans 5:6 tells us that Jesus Christ died for us at “just the right time” while we were still sinners.  In fact, incredibly II Timothy 1:9 says, “This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time.”  God gives His grace in His time.  He can see the big picture.  He loves His children and knows what’s best.  And yet so often we think we know better, try and do things our way, build on the wrong foundation, plant in the wrong field.  But God wants us to trust Him and look to Him to give us what we need.  Grace comes to us in times and ways we don’t expect, all made possible in Jesus Christ!

Prayer
Loving Father, thank you so much for your incredible grace, given with perfect timing in the way that is best.  Help us to truly appreciate everything you do for us, and to always trust you.  In the name of Jesus.
Amen
