The Gift of a Child

First of a Series

“Now the Lord was gracious to Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did for Sarah what he had promised.  Sarah became pregnant and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the very time God had promised him.”
Genesis 21:1-2 (NIV)

Five years ago our daughter Lydia was born, almost three months premature. In this series I’d like to share the story of the early weeks and months of her life, since I believe it to be a wonderful testimony of God’s grace and love. And I’d like to share a few of the powerful lessons we learned, which in many ways are a parallel of the story of all Christians.

Lydia’s story actually begins before she was even born. My wife suffers from some underlying health problems which meant we weren’t even sure if we would be able to have children. So it was a time of great joy when we found out she was pregnant. My wife says she’d never seen me with such a huge grin on my face as I had that day.

Being able to have a child was a great blessing from God, an expression of His grace and kindness. It gave me a glimpse in a small way of how Abraham and Sarah must have felt when they found she was pregnant with Isaac. As we see from the scripture above, God kept His promise and blessed Abraham and Sarah with a child even when they were well past the age when this would normally be possible. In verse 6 we see the joyful emotions: “Sarah said, ‘God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me.’”

The gift of a child is a wonderful blessing from God, and all the more so when humanly it seems impossible. God is loving and gracious and keeps His promises. And the ultimate expression of that love and grace was in the giving of another child, His own Son Jesus Christ (John 3:16).

Let’s thank God with great joy for the gift of children!

Prayer
Father, thank you so much for all your blessings and the gifts you give, which sometimes don’t even seem possible. Thank you especially for children—and above all, for the gift of your Son, Jesus Christ.
Amen
