Don’t Believe Everything You Think!

“Why are you down in the dumps, dear soul? Why are you crying the blues? Fix my eyes on God—soon I’ll be praising again. He puts a smile on my face. He’s my God.”
Psalm 42:11 (MSG)

This morning I was listening to a talk entitled, “Don’t let hell push you around.” It was about our negative self talk and critical thoughts. After reviewing it, three words came to mind—doubt, depression and despair. In analyzing my self-talk I noticed that it is frequently, and far too often, not positive. How about yours?

Doubt:  If you were really a Christian, filled with the Holy Spirit, you would not do that or keep on doing this!
Depression:  You are hopeless, can’t do anything right and even lack the energy or capacity to even try.
Despair:  Just give up as it is not worth it and no-one really cares anyway.

Thank God He does not leave you or me to wallow in the “slough of despond” because there is a way of escape. As we read in Pilgrim’s Progress, “Help says to Christian, ‘Give me thy hand.’ So he gave him his hand, and he drew him out; and set him upon some ground, and bade him go on his way.”

Through God’s word, His Spirit and other people, we are given hope, holiness and help to see us through those hard and difficult times when we feel like we are drowning in doubt, depression and despair. So yes, you and I have messed up royally, too many times to count, and got down.  However, our spirits are revived and our thoughts transformed. So we end up in a better place by thinking differently, based on truth and the love of God.

As the Psalmist reminds us in chapters 42 and 43, “My soul is downcast within me; therefore I will remember you… Send me your light and your faithful care, let them lead me; let them bring me to your holy mountain, to the place where you dwell. Then I will go to the altar of God, to God, my joy and my delight. I will praise you with the lyre, O God, my God… Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Saviour and my God.” (Psalm 42:6;  43:3-5)

Loving Father, thank you for watching over us and caring for us day and night. Now help us to seek you and meditate on your word so our days are filled with thoughts of you. Then bless us at night with your beloved and peaceful sleep. In Jesus’ name.
