I Have Started So I’ll Finish!

“…being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 1:6 (NIV)

The quiz show ‘Mastermind’ began in 1972.  Since then British viewers have enjoyed the challenge of understanding the testing questions much more than being able to provide the answers.  The original host of the programme was Magnus Magnusson—a man of stature in the world of television.  He presented the contest with authority and flair.  Quite unintentionally he created a catchphrase.  Magnus would give the question and the buzzer, indicating that the contestant’s two minutes had expired, would sound during the question and he would say, emphatically, “I have started so I will finish.”

The apostle Paul used a similar expression in Philippians 1:6, quoted above.  God, our ultimate Mastermind has begun a good work in you and will see it through to the end. When we stumble spiritually, as we surely do, this promise offers tremendous reassurance. Paul was totally convinced of this pledge; he gives the same hope in 1 Corinthians 1:8: “He will also keep you firm to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

On the day of his return our Saviour has made us blameless before God by his sacrifice.  In the meantime, we are exhorted to continue in the Saviour’s path. Galatians 6:9 exhorts us, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”  We need to persevere through the trials of this life, “but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.” Matthew 24:13.

On that day there will be no tough questions to answer and no forbidding black chair.  Our God has rewards beyond our limited imagination. He has started and He will finish!

Loving Father thank you so much that, despite our human frailties, you will finish the work that you have started in us.  Your loving mercy covers us and we are washed clean by the blood of our Saviour your Son Jesus – thank you great God.
