The Blossoming of Hearts and Minds

“For the Lord will comfort Zion, He will comfort all her waste places; He will make her wilderness like Eden, and her desert like the garden of the LORD;”
Isaiah 51:3 (NKJV)

In the mornings during the recent hot weather, I have opened the conservatory door in order to open the windows to prevent unduly high temperatures building up, as it faces south.  One morning, a sweet, heady fragrance wafted into the living room from, of all things, a spineless cactus, the technical name of which I can no longer remember, except my daughter, whose cactus it is, has named it ‘Joey’.

The flower is pale cream, with lots of petals, on a long stem covered with dark grey fluff.  They do not last long, only a day in hot weather, 3 days if it is cooler.  It is wonderful while it lasts and reminds me of 2 Corinthians 2:14-15, “Now thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and through us diffuses the fragrance of His knowledge in every place.  For we are to God the fragrance of Christ among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing.”

This is part of our remit as Christians, to spread a fragrance as we go that permeates into other lives and hearts, and will be a reminder of good things to come.  Also, we will be able to live on earth as God wanted us to in the first place.  “They shall not hurt nor destroy in all My holy mountain, For the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord As the waters cover the sea.” (Isaiah 11:9)

Just as ‘Joey’ flowered, so will the deserts.  Read in Isaiah 35:1, “The wilderness and the wasteland shall be glad for them, and the desert shall rejoice and blossom as the rose.” Just as the desert will be transformed with cacti flowering in them, spreading their heady scent for all who are willing to breathe it in, so shall the lives of all humanity have the chance to blossom and to be transformed by the renewing of their minds (Romans 12:2).

Prayer
Dear Father, we patiently wait for the new Earth and Heavens to be revealed. While we wait, guide us to see how you are renewing our hearts and minds today. We praise you for the fragrance of Christ that you have brought into our lives.
Amen
