Jesus Christ Revealed

“This one who is life itself was revealed to us, and we have seen him.  And now we testify and proclaim to you that he is the one who is eternal life.  He was with the Father, and then he was revealed to us.”
1 John 1:2 (NLT)

In a recent sermon, the minister referred to The Lone Ranger: a masked man who comes to fight injustice and do good deeds, but then disappears and people ask, “Who is this man?”  He drew the analogy of Jesus, the Son of God, masked in human flesh, disguising his true nature (God), coming into the physical realm to fight injustice, do good deeds, setting us an example to follow, and then ascending to heaven till a future date.  When he stilled the storm, people were amazed and asked, “Who is this man?” (Matthew 8:27)  “Who is this man?” they asked when he told the woman her sins were forgiven.  (Luke 7:44-49)  “Who is this man?” asked Herod when he heard all the stories about Jesus casting out demons, healing the sick and feeding the 5,000! (Luke 9:7-9)

The Holy Spirit revealed the real Jesus to his disciples as we read in Matthew 16:13-17 when Simon Peter declares Jesus the “Messiah, the Son of the living God”.  And Jesus told them in Matthew 10:26-27, that this good news would soon be revealed to all.  Romans 16:25 says, “This message about Jesus Christ has revealed his plan for you Gentiles, a plan kept secret from the beginning of time.”  And 1 Corinthians 2:7-8 tells us, “The wisdom we speak of is the mystery of God – his plan that was previously hidden, even though he made it for our ultimate glory before the world began.  But the rulers of this world have not understood it; if they had, they would not have crucified our glorious Lord.”

Peter reveals the real Jesus in Acts 2.  In verses 22-23 and 32-33, he tells the people, “God publicly endorsed Jesus the Nazarene by doing powerful miracles, wonders, and signs through him, as you well know.  But God knew what would happen, and his prearranged plan was carried out when Jesus was betrayed.  With the help of lawless Gentiles, you nailed him to a cross and killed him…God raised Jesus from the dead, and we are all witnesses of this.  Now he is exalted to the place of highest honour in heaven, at God’s right hand.”

Paul reveals the real Jesus to the Greeks in Athens, saying, “Men of Athens, I notice that you are very religious in every way, for as I was walking along I saw your many shrines.  And one of your altars had this inscription on it: ‘To an Unknown God.’  This God, whom you worship without knowing, is the one I’m telling you about.  He is the God who made the world and everything in it…the Lord of heaven and earth…He himself gives life and breath to everything…” (Acts 17:22-25)

The mystery of Jesus is now revealed to all.  As Paul says in 1 Timothy 3:16, “Without question, this is the great mystery of our faith:  Christ was revealed in a human body and vindicated by the Spirit.  He was seen by angels and announced to the nations.  He was believed in throughout the world and taken to heaven in glory.”

Our eyes have been opened to the mystery of Jesus Christ, and so in his name we give our petitions, thanks and praises to God.  For in Him we live and move and have our being (Acts 17:28).
