Marriage in the Modern World

“Has not the one God made you? You belong to him in body and spirit. And what does the one God seek? Godly offspring. So be on your guard, and do not be unfaithful to the wife of your youth.”
Malachi 2:15 (NIV)

My wife and I recently celebrated 40 years of marriage.  In this present age in which we live it is an institution which seems to be taken very lightly.

During the time we have been married, successive governments have passed laws which have made divorce far too easy.  It is a sad state of affairs which has not left the Church untouched.  A refrain we hear in society is that marriage is just a bit of paper. What about money? Is it just a bit of paper? I think we understand it is about what it represents and what it can achieve.

God instituted marriage for the good of mankind, to provide a nurturing environment, especially for children.  It is a place of example in which strong ties are built.  When there are a large number of marriage breakdowns in a nation, that nation suffers. In turn it leads to social problems which has a trickle down effect on society and the nation.

Marriage creates a system where the building of character takes place and stability is provided for the whole family. Children in a loving marriage are healthier, happier and do better at school. Solid families provide support and comfort in difficult and frightening times.  We are living in those times now. To me this proves that even in a secular society the God-given institution of marriage holds great value.

Our churches are mainly silent due to all the controversy on issues like same-sex “marriage”.  It seems that the world never learns from history or revelation.  Was it Einstein who said that the definition of insanity is to repeat the same things and expect a different outcome? The example of ancient Israel should be lesson to all of us, and to all nations. They were unfaithful by committing  spiritual adultery and following the customs of the nations around them. Finally, God divorced them and they lost their inheritance. However, today we have a better calling (relationship) based on better promises, as Hebrews tells us (8:6). He is faithful giving us forgiveness and the desire to repent.

Our leaders, for whom we pray, direct the affairs of a nation and its vision.  Thankfully, we have a Servant King in Jesus Christ. His desire for us is clear and what he requires from us is plain.  He only gives us what is good.  So, let us not be seduced or confused by the ways of this world.  Christ is returning and marriage is so good that He is going to have one.  He will take His Bride who is spotless and without blemish, the Church. As Paul tells us, the wondrous mystery of marriage is revealed (Ephesians 5:22-32).

Loving Father, thank you for marriage which you ordained from the beginning.  Help us to truly appreciate the gifts of love, marriage and family which you have given. In Jesus name.
