Sing It Loud And All Day Long

“Burst into songs of joy together”
Isaiah 52:9 (NIV UK)

When we sing together, we become as one. According to a recent report from Sweden, our heartbeats synchronize with the beat of the music and our pulses increase or decrease along with the tempo. It creates a feeling of wellbeing and togetherness.

Isaiah wanted his readers to rise above their problems and envision a better future than their current godless society in which “all day long” the name of God was “constantly blasphemed” (Isaiah 52:5). He told them that “all the ends of the earth” would “see the salvation of our God” (52:10). God would send his Servant who would “act wisely”, and would be “raised and lifted up and highly exalted” after his appearance had been “so disfigured beyond that of any man and his form marred beyond human likeness” (52:14-14). He was, of course, prophesying about Jesus Christ. Everyone could come together in hope “for what they were not told, they will see, and what they have not heard, they will understand” (52:15).

As an expression of that universal hope, Isaiah exclaimed, “Burst into songs of joy together”. Just like a slave has chains around his neck so we are enslaved by the world around us. But don’t be concerned: you have been redeemed. You are free because “Your God reigns!” (52:2, 7) Come together in song, let your hearts beat in unison to the rhythm of grace, let’s preach the peace and good tidings to come.

Is there a lesson here for us today, some two thousand five hundred years after Isaiah wrote? His description of how things were in his days doesn’t sound that different from how they are in ours, does it? We try to proclaim the gospel, but there’s so much noise all around that only a few hear it. Is there any hope? Yes – the message remains the same: those, who have not been told, will hear, and what they have not heard, they will understand.  Jesus has died and rose again for all.

So what should we do? Well, burst into songs of joy, is what Isaiah said. Come together as one and let the world hear God’s song of salvation.

Great God, help us together to sing your song of salvation in every aspect of our life. Help us to proclaim your Servant, Jesus. In Jesus’ name.
