“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 4:6-7 (KJV)

We all want an easy life and as Christians we can sometimes be fooled by the argument that now life will be easy, but this is based on the false premise that once we accept Christ in our lives, all our problems will vanish!

God doesn’t promise us fairy tales, nor an easy life.  John 16:33 tells us in this world we shall have tribulation: and the previous chapter tells us that if the world hates us, we should bear in mind that the world hated Christ first. He brings the reality that if they persecuted Him we should expect no less.

What God does promise is to be there for us, to not abandon us.  Psalm 37: 24, 26 tells us, “Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the Lord upholds him with his hand… He is ever merciful.”  And in John 14:18 we read that he will not leave us comfortless but will come to us. God has forewarned us about these things so that when we find ourselves in trouble we will look to him and the peace that he has left with us, given to us, not how the world gives, but so that our hearts will neither be troubled nor afraid (John 14:27).

A great preacher once ended his sermon with this encouraging statement:
“Brethren, I’ve read to the end of the book, and guess what? We win!”

Father in heaven, we thank you that through listening to you, through loving you and through believing you, we can have your peace which passes all understanding. In Jesus’ name we pray.
