Out With The Old!

“I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.”
Galatians 2:20 (NKJV)

It seems only yesterday we were celebrating the millennial January 1, 2000, let alone 2013! And here we are with winter and spring also but distant memories. Time seems to speed up as we get older. I suppose it is all a result of perception and percentages. When we are one year old, our whole lifetime seems to consist of that 12 months, all 100 per cent of it (not that a baby will remember much about that, of course). But when we reach 60 we have had to cram in 720 months into our lifetime, so that each month can only ‘take up’ so much percentage of the whole—about 14 per cent.

It’s a bit like that with our Christian lives. As we get older, more and more from the past ‘takes up space’ in our memory and lifetimes. I’m not suggesting we need a wholesale clear-out, but perhaps from time to time it would be appropriate to have a look in the nooks and crannies of our brain boxes and memories, and to see what we no longer need. On a computer there is usually some programme working away in the background which comes up periodically and asks “Do you want to archive your old files now?” Perhaps we need something similar for our past lives to aid us in our Christian lives today.

Of course, not everything is bad. There are good memories we will want to keep, but we do need to remember that at baptism we crucified our old man, or woman, with Christ and rose anew to a new life (Galatians 6:14). Out with the old!

Prayer
Most merciful Father, we are a new creation to you in Christ Jesus. But so often we don’t perceive that as our Christian reality. We ask for your vision in our own lives. In Jesus’ name we pray.
Amen
