Relax, You’ll Get It

“…follow me.”
John 12:26 MSG

A lady was describing on radio the secret to dancing so well with her partner that they were beautiful to watch. The secret, she said, was being ‘available’.

What she meant by that was relaxing in her partner’s arms and letting him take her wherever he wished. She didn’t have to anticipate where he was going or what steps he was about to take, nor did she need to worry if she was making a mess of it. All she had to do was live in the present moment, aware only that she was in her partner’s arms, and once she grasped that, it made dancing a joy.

I thought about that in my relationship with Jesus. It’s like a dance, too. He made me his disciple and partner, and to all his disciples he said, “If any of you wants to serve me, then follow me” (John 12:26). Just follow my lead he says, that’s all.

So what makes a good follower? In John 10:4 it says, “they follow because they are familiar with his voice.” Dancing partners become very familiar. Dance together long enough and they dance in sync without thinking. The slightest pressure of the man’s hip, of his fingertips or turn of head, and it’s all so familiar to his partner that she simply responds, automatically.

It doesn’t happen right away. For the lady on the radio it didn’t click at all for some time, but she kept on trying to relax and to let her partner lead. And then one marvelous day it happened—she suddenly moved in sync with him without thinking. Something in her brain had eventually locked in, and it was all so easy after that.

The Spirit does that in our brains too. He gradually makes Jesus familiar (John 14:26), he makes sense of everything Jesus said and did (John 16:13-15), and he transforms us into Jesus’ likeness so that we move in perfect sync with him (2 Corinthians 3:18)—to the point that it all comes easily and automatically, just as it does in dancing, and then it’s a joy.

You can almost hear the Spirit saying, “Relax, you’ll get it.” Relax in his arms and he’ll have us gliding us round the floor with Jesus like professionals (Galatians 5:25). Just relax and let him lead, because that, the lady said, is the secret.

To be beautiful, to watch as we glide round the dance floor in perfect sync with Jesus: What a dream, Father. And thanks to the Spirit, it’s possible.
