God’s Healing Hand

“Are any among you sick?  They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord.  The prayer of faith will save the sick.”
James 5:14-15 (NRSV)

A few months ago I was told by my surgeon that I would need a tumour removing from my large bowel.  He appeared very confident and this gave me confidence.  Soon after, I called for my Pastor, to be anointed according to the scripture above, and put things in God’s hands.

The operation was successful but then the subject of chemotherapy came up, which I found daunting, expecting months of feeling ill.  I was inclined to go ahead, but I prayed to God for guidance.  Shortly after this, I read a passage in the Apocrypha*, in the book of Ecclesiasticus, chapter 38, in praise of doctors.  Verses 1-2 and 6-7 say, “Honour a physician with the honour due unto him for the uses which ye may have of him:  for the Lord hath created him.  For of the most High cometh healing, and he shall receive honour of the king…And he hath given men skill, that he might be honoured in his marvellous works.  With such doth he heal [men,] and taketh away their pains.”  Although the Apocrypha is not Holy Scripture, I feel that after praying about it, God had guided me to this passage.  I felt sure I should undergo the chemotherapy with confidence.

While I regard God as my healer, and know He could heal me miraculously if that is his will, I see no problem in believing that God has gifted members of the medical profession with their skills for our benefit.

Thank you for your healing, loving Father, and for sustaining us on our sickbeds.

*Editor’s note:  The Apocrypha is a collection of books, written between the old and new testaments, which are not part of the accepted canon of scripture.
