Life For Life…

“And if any mischief follow, then thou shalt give life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burning for burning, wound for wound, stripe for stripe. “
Exodus 21:23-25( KJV)

Although the title scripture is often quoted on it’s own, it is taken from God’s instructions concerning the just recompense for death and injury.  The verses from which they are taken give a pointer to the then-yet-future vicarious sacrifice for ALL mankind—the second Adam paying for the sins of the first Adam and all his offspring.  The Second Adam—Christ Jesus, the only begotten Son of God, God in the flesh, Immanuel, our Passover, Atonement and  now resurrected living eternal High Priest after the order of Melchizedek.

Consider the words, “life for life”, and recall that the Word of God,  the Logos, created all things (John 1:1-14), and later became a human being, yet fully God. He lived a sinless life in order to pay our death penalty for sin so we may have eternal life (Ezekiel 18:4, 20;  John 3:16-17; 2 Corinthians 5:21). As Creator God in the flesh, Jesus’ life alone is not merely equal to, but infinitely superior to, the lives of all humans, from Adam and Eve to whoever is the last.

In the passage from Exodus 21, cited above, we have yet another verification of the statement in Psalm 40:7, “…in the volume of the book it is written of me,” referring to Christ Jesus,  “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead!” (1 Peter 1:3)

Loving God, help us to stand in awe of your marvellous love, grace, truth, redemption and salvation, embodied in your only begotten Son, Jesus Christ—the only name under heaven by which we may be saved.  In His name we pray.

    Hello John
A very thought provoking view on this scripture. I haven’t considered this before and it has got me thinking!
Great article on how the Old Testament points to Jesus.
    Kind Regards
