The Giant Memory Bank Up There In The Sky

“If a man dies, will he live again?…You will call, and I will answer you…”
Job14:14-15 (NASB)

Every family likes to try and sit down together around the dining room table for a meal, but with my son it was becoming ncreasingly difficult. Every five minutes or so his mobile phone rings and he leaves the table to answer it.

“How do you manage?” I ask him. “You travel the world and still manage to run two companies—and it seems all just from that one phone, entirely from that one little mobile phone! You are never off it! How do you do it, and how do you remember everything that has to be done each day?”

The questions from my family then came thick and fast: “What if your phone got lost or stolen?”  “What if it broke down and lost its memory—you know, if it just died, the battery went dead?”  “What if you wanted to upgrade to a better model phone?” “Aren’t you taking a big risk with your lifestyle, using your phone like this around the world in wild out of the way places?”

His reply surprised us. “No risk at all—have you not heard of Cloud Computing? My i-phone is in constant touch with what we call ‘The Cloud’. It is constantly backed up. It’s like a giant memory bank up there in the sky, and The Cloud also gives you answers too, to questions like where am I, what do I have to do today, etc.. I know I am forever safe with The Cloud, because if my phone died, everything, all my business and personal life can come back out of The Cloud and be instantly placed in another phone. Do not be amazed at this, we can do wonders with computing these days.”

I immediately thought of Jesus’ words in John 5:28-29, “Do not marvel at this…all who are in the tombs will hear His voice, and will come forth…”  Here was my chance to explain to my family that all that we do in this world, our spirit, our whole character and memory, is recorded by God ready for the resurrection. This God-given ‘facility’ has been known by People of God since Old Testament times. We can read, “Remember Him [that is remember God] before the silver cord is broken…then the dust will return to the earth as it was, and the spirit will return to God who gave it” (Ecclesiastes 12:6-7). Yes, the spirit, our spirit, returns to God. You can also read Job 14:14 “If a man dies, will he live again?”  And Job answers his question in verse 15, “You will call, and I will answer you.” Many others spoke of this too, for example in Revelation 20:12.

Thank God that there is a heavenly database to replace us, if and when we die, or if through mental illness our memory is stolen from us. We will be replaced as promised by Jesus – and upgraded to a better model.

Isn’t that wonderful news.

Prayer
Thank you, God, that we can pray to you in Jesus’ name and that we are forever safe in your hands.
Amen

    Hello Michael
This is a great article! A wonderful analogy from modern life to highlight how God “records” us for the resurrection. Look forward to seeing future articles!
