Present Suffering and  Future Glory

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”
Romans 8:28 (NIV)

The scripture above is my favourite scripture.  It gives such comfort and hope when we see the terrible things that are happening in the world today, from natural disasters to the brutal murder of soldier Lee Rigby in the streets of London.

Many people question how a God of love can allow such evil and suffering, but if you truly believe in our God who IS love, and that the Bible is his Word to us yesterday, today and tomorrow, then we can take great comfort in reading Romans 8.

Tsunamis and Tornadoes are put in their place when we read verse 18, “I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.”

Financial troubles and physical illness are put in perspective when we read verses 22-23, “We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies.”

Persecuted Christians can say with verse 31, “What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?”

Whatever our difficulty, crisis or suffering we can say, “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?…For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:35, 38-39)

Giver of life, be with those who are suffering in this present world while we wait for Life Eternal where pain, sorrow and death will be gone forever.
