The Boatbuilding Preacher!
“Now the earth was corrupt in God’s sight and was full of violence.”
Genesis 6:11 (NIV)
The flood distinctly marks the end of one order of things and the beginning of another. A man called Noah was chosen by God to be the one to make provision for the continuation of all human and animal life on earth when the deluge was over.
You might ask, “Why was this man chosen out of all the people of the world?” The answer as you might guess is; “This is the account of Noah…Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked with God.” (Genesis 6:9). The apostle Peter calls him, “a preacher of righteousness” in 2 Peter 2: 5. We don’t know a lot more about this individual except that he was obedient to the call of God. He built a gigantic vessel hundreds of miles from the nearest ocean. No doubt he became a laughingstock and perhaps was even called “Crazy Noah” by everyone who witnessed the construction of the Ark. But he held on to his faith and toiled year after year to fulfil God’s purpose. While sawing wood and hammering nails this “preacher of righteousness” faithfully witnessed to the godless unbelievers around him about the end of one age and the beginning of another—but no one listened!
Notice Hebrews 11:7 tells us about this amazing servant of God in what we call the faith chapter, “By faith Noah, when warned about things yet not seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family. By his faith he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that is in keeping with faith.”
Jesus had something to say about the evil days in which Noah lived, while answering a question posed by the Pharisees about the time of the coming of the Kingdom of God. He replied; “Just as it was in the days of Noah, so also will it be in the days of the Son of Man. People were eating, drinking, marrying and being given in marriage up to the day Noah entered the ark. Then the flood came and destroyed them all.” (Luke 17:26) The people then were doing all of these things but one thing they weren’t doing was listening. “It will be just like this on the day the Son of Man is revealed.”(verse 30)
It is this future time of the end of one era and the beginning of another that Christian voices witness about today and hopefully someone is listening! Are you? We can choose to turn to God today.
Father, please give your children power and the gift of faithfulness today as they witness about the return of your beloved Son as King of Kings and Lord of Lords to bring peace to this troubled world.
