Shaun The Sheep

“I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me—just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep.”
John 10:14-15 (NIV)

Closing the gates to the church, we spotted an ol’ battered football in the grounds. I decided to retrieve it and place it safely off the road, on the green for the local kids to have a kick about with it later. Saves them climbing over the gate or the wall for the ball. Thought comes to mind—ball looks like its about to be given up on anyway. Why not a bit of, ah, cheeky advertising? Businesses advertise all the time. Churches can advertise but its costly. So I scribble on the ol’ ball in big letters, ‘Jesus loves you’.

Later that afternoon, two ladies and I host a small service with a few residential home guests. They can’t get out easily. They always give us a nice welcome. One of the ladies is giving a talk about the good shepherd. Thoughtfully she gives out drawings of sheep with the names of each guest written on. The ladies and the guests didn’t know what I’d written on the football earlier. What’s happened to that ball now, I don’t know.

In a nice coincidental kind of way I am given a drawing of a sheep. At first I overlook what’s scribbled on it, as I can be a sleepy sheep. On it is written the same thing as on that dusty street-weathered pitch-weary football earlier. This time its personalised : ‘Sean, Jesus loves you’. I smile, God has a sense of humour. He loves Sean the Sheep too! Reminds me of a lovely day when I visited with our cousin in Bexhill. And Shaun the Sheep was on telly.  As I walked in; the kids all together went; Shaun the Sheep!!! And you know what? Believe it or not; God loves ewe, I mean, you; too, like you’re one of the family. So don’t bleat yourself up. 🙂

When we’ve strayed, you went out into the streets and fields to find us, Lord.  Thank you that you are good, so good to us, that you lay down your life for the sheep, and even then, you do not leave us. You take up your life again and carry us with you—you are with us evermore. May more and more come to know you as the Good Shepherd who loves all of us and lays down his life for us, and lives with us evermore.

Sean…after reading your quirky Day by Day, I thought you were trying to ‘pull the wool over our eyes’! Only kidding…it was funny, but also made a valuable point. A good start to the day.

Got something to say?
