A Lasting Legacy

“Truly I tell you, wherever this gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.”
Matthew 26:13 (NIV)

It is alleged that Tony Blair spent a considerable amount of time and energy on trying to leave behind the right legacy during his time as Prime Minister and the jury is probably still out on that.

Some women fight for formal recognition in church, whether it be ordained minister, bishop or archbishop.  Yet Mary achieved glory – as it were – without even trying, she just followed her heart.  She did not know she was preparing Christ for His burial.  We read about it in Matthew 26:6-13 (MSG), “When Jesus was at Bethany, a guest of Simon the Leper, a woman came up to him as he was eating dinner and anointed him with a bottle of very expensive perfume. When the disciples saw what was happening, they were furious. ‘That’s criminal! This could have been sold for a lot and the money handed out to the poor.’ When Jesus realized what was going on, he intervened. ‘Why are you giving this woman a hard time? She has just done something wonderfully significant for me. You will have the poor with you every day for the rest of your lives, but not me. When she poured this perfume on my body, what she really did was anoint me for burial. You can be sure that wherever in the whole world the Message is preached, what she has just done is going to be remembered and admired.’”

The Gospel of the Kingdom of God is the most important message left for mankind and yet Mary’s act of anointing Jesus gets mentioned with it.  Wherever it is preached!  All round the world!

Scofield Reference Notes tell us that Mary shows us the worship of a grateful heart.  When our actions are motivated by the love of God, as with Mary, we can leave behind a wonderful, lasting legacy without even trying.

Father in heaven, we thank You for showing us how we can worship you with the simplest of acts once we are motivated by Your love.  In Jesus’ name we pray.
