God Does What it Says on the Tin

“For the word of the LORD is right and true; he is faithful in all he does.”
Psalm 33:4 (NIV)

At the half-way point of the Conservative/Lib-Dem coalition government, David Cameron said that the coalition is not so much a marriage, but a ‘Ronseal agreement’ – ‘It does what it says on the tin’.

That phrase is a brilliant advertising slogan and has now entered into popular culture to demonstrate reliability.  I’m sure we have all bought a product or used a service after reading an advertisement, only to find that it did not match up to its claims.  Our experiences demonstrate that reliability is elusive.  Products fail, services don’t come up to standard and people and companies disappoint.

We can end up becoming suspicious and cynical about all claims and promises.  But with God there is reliability—it is a part of his character. He is stable and faithful. All God’s words can be relied upon because, unlike people, God does not lie, forget, change his words, or leave his promises unfulfilled.

Amid all the change and uncertainty of life there are certain things about God we can always count on. Here are just a few verses that have encouraged me during difficult times:
“‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’” (Jeremiah 29:11)
“Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 1:6)
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28)
“…And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Matthew 28:20)

I know that God means, and will complete, what he says—He always does what it says on the tin.

Father, thank you for your sure promises, and your unchangeable character.  Help me to believe and trust in your unfailing love today, tomorrow and forever.
