A Penny For The Thoughts…Of Angels

“So the Lord God banished him [Adam] from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken. After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.”
Genesis 3:23-24 (NIV 2011)

I often wonder about those angels, guarding the entrance to the Garden of Eden. What was going through their minds? The “Genesis Project” appeared to be in tatters. The crowning glory of creation, humanity, had turned away and spurned their role in the cosmos. The children of Adam and Eve then set off down the path of self destruction, which all came to a terrible conclusion at the flood.

Was it all a disaster? There must have been great sadness in the universe that day. The angels surely pondered what God would do next. God set out to rescue: setting the scene with the calling of Old Testament Israel. God then acted through our Lord, Jesus Christ: “See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David has triumphed” (Revelation 5:5).

The Book of Revelation then tells of a celebration in heaven, with a song praising Jesus’ victory: “…with your blood you purchased for God persons from every tribe and language and people and nation. You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God and they will reign on the earth” (Revelation 5:9-10).

Jesus has paid the great price; Christ’s blood has put right all the damage done at Eden. We are no longer overshadowed by our past. However many “skeletons” you feel to be lurking in the “cupboard” of your life, do not fear them anymore. Jesus has cleansed us all. We are free to live for God.

As for our angels at the Garden of Eden, there is no more sadness. They see the risen Son of God, victorious over death, and they sing: “Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honour and glory and praise!” (Revelation 5:12).

There will be a day when we will join those angels in the great praise that echoes throughout heaven. What a wonderful day that will be!

Gracious Father, how wonderful it is to read of the great angelic song that celebrates the victory of Jesus. We desire to join in with the great choir of heaven and offer our praises and thanksgiving in
honour of the sacrifice of your Son. In Jesus’ name we pray.
