Got My Bag, Got My Reservation

“…reserved in heaven for you.”
1 Peter 1:4 (NKJV)

If you don’t print off your boarding pass, you may have to pay a fine or be refused boarding. This warning made me so uptight that I kept checking the printouts in my extra-light carry-on bag. What if they could not read the barcode? Would it be back to square one? Today flying can be tense even before you get on the plane!!

I wonder whether making it into the Kingdom of God is as nerve-racking. Do we need to prepare our luggage to exacting specifications and to get all the right documentation in place? Will there be some sober-faced check-in angel ready to delete our name from the flight list if we fail to meet the requirements?

The truth is that we don’t need to worry because Jesus has sorted it all out for us.

The Christian festival of Pentecost reassures us of our glorious future in Christ. There is no need for anxiety. Jesus has done everything for us. He has paid the price, made the reservation, given us a guarantee, and is preparing for our being eternally with him.

Peter’s readers lived in an age of uncertainty. Life was unfair, and in some places there was persecution. There was, however, one thing about which believers could be certain—we “are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time” (1 Peter 1:5). So great is the faithfulness of Jesus that he has reserved a place in heaven for us. He told us, “I go to prepare a place for you” (John 14:2). Hebrews 12:23 notes that we are “registered in heaven”.

After Jesus’ ascension, he and the Father sent the Holy Spirit to dwell within us. Not only does the Holy Spirit continue Christ’s mighty kingdom work through us now, but also the Spirit is the “guarantee of our inheritance” (Ephesians 1:14).

Perhaps you remember the song popularized by Doris Day, Ringo Starr and others. It was called “Sentimental Journey”. Of course, our future with God is so much more than a series of reminiscences and hopeful expectations. “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man, the things that God has prepared for those who love Him” (1 Corinthians 2:9).

Whatever our journey is, we’ve got our bag, and got our reservation! And, like children in wild anticipation, we can long to be all aboard in Christ.

Heavenly Father, thank you for the Holy Spirit, who dwells us in us now, and who assures us of our future in Christ with you. In Jesus’ name.
