For All His Life Was Worth

“I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”
John 10:10 (NIV)

‘Oh bless him, he ran for all his life was worth.’  The woman was describing her grandchild in a race at the school sports day.  The metaphor she used is not uncommon:  ‘running for all his life was worth.’  An abbreviated version is ‘running for his life’.  The inference is that the individual exerted total effort, absolute determination to give all.  The conclusion leaving the participant spent of energy, with no reserve.

No matter how much effort we extend spiritually in an effort to gain the prize of eternal life – we will fail.  We will not win the ‘race’, because there is already a winner.  Jesus crossed the finishing line when he stepped out of the tomb—he knew what his life was worth, God himself in a human form, willing to give his life for all of humanity—past, present and future.  His purpose here on earth was to give us life – forever.

In Acts 20:24, the apostle Paul described his life journey as a race.  Paul knew his life of itself was worthless.  However, he was determined to finish the task given to him—that of declaring the good news of God’s grace to mankind, extended to us because Jesus ran His race for all His life was worth.

Father, how can we thank you enough for the grace you have shown us through the death and resurrection of our Saviour Jesus, your precious Son? We are humbled by it as we know that we are unworthy – yet you love us – thank you loving Father.
