Grace Is Amazing!

“For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring us to God.”
1 Peter 3:18 (NIV)

I watched an afternoon programme today on TV. This is something that I never do but for some strange reason I felt drawn to do so. It was entitled “Undercover Boss USA”, where the Chancellor of the University of California disguises himself and spends some time working with a few students around the university campus. They of course, do not have a clue who he is but he, on the other hand gets to know them very well and finds out some of the things that they would like to see changed on campus in order for things to work more smoothly. During his interaction with them he also gets to know a bit about their lifestyle and family problems and also just how much debt they are struggling with in order to get an education.

The big climax is when he reveals who he really is to these young people. He takes off the false moustache, the large glasses and the false earring. After telling them how much he has appreciated all they do on campus to keep things running well, he drops a bombshell, by informing some of them that through some generous sponsors he is cancelling their debt completely and also offering them scholarships whereby their future college fees would also be paid! These young people were dumbfounded and in tears because of his amazing generosity and talked about the great burden that had been lifted from off their shoulders! And the overwhelming joy and thankfulness they are experiencing because of this wonderful news.

See, he didn’t just cancel their present debt but all the other debt for their future years in education. Wow—no wonder they were crying tears of joy—no wonder they felt this great load being lifted from off their shoulders, what amazing grace! Notice this scripture: “He (Jesus) forgave all our sins. He cancelled the debt, which listed all the rules we failed to follow. He took away that record with its rules and nailed it to the cross.” (Colossians 2:13-14 NCV Italics mine).

Not only did Jesus take away all of our present sins when he died but all the sins we would ever commit. The slate is wiped clean and all our debts are forgiven; we are free from that burden forever. Let’s cry tears of joy; let’s express our thankfulness and appreciation continually, praising our loving God for his Amazing Grace!

Thanks be to you, Great God, for reaching down and touching our useless lives, for washing us whiter than snow, and cleansing us from all iniquity through Jesus Christ your Son.
