Spreading The News In 2013

“There was also a prophetess, Anna…Coming up to them at that very moment, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem”
Luke 2:36-38 (NIV UK)

If someone is looking forward to the end of the world as we know it, what should we talk about? The 84-year-old widow, Anna, was in no doubt. You talk to them about the child, Jesus.

Anna was one of the few female spiritual leaders of Judah. She was a prophetess, thus ranking up there with Deborah, Miriam, Sarah and Hannah. She had lived her life in prayerful anticipation of the Messiah.

Therefore, “when the kindness and the love of God our Saviour appeared” (Titus 3:4), she could not contain her excitement. The news and witness of the birth of Jesus energized her completely. She had to declare our salvation, which was “not because of righteous things we had done”. Those who understood had much good news to spread.

Once 2013 is in full swing and all our celebrations have faded into distant memory, will we still talk about the child? Are our discussions about how Christ was born for us merely cyclical, and they can now wait until next December? I hope not.

Let’s take a lesson from Anna. Let the birth of Jesus and its message of salvation energize us throughout 2013. Don’t stop talking about the child, the Son of God. Spread the news that God came to us in Christ Jesus and that he lives with us still.

Father, thank you for the good news of Jesus. Help us to be energized by his story that we may join him in spreading the gospel.  In Jesus’ name.
