God’s Morning Blessing!

“Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, Because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness.”
Lamentations 3:22-23 (NKJV)

I only learned fairly recently that the planets in our solar system all have differing lengths of days. In the past—if I even thought about it at all—I assumed that these would all be the same; but no! Obviously the lengths of the day and night on each planet are set by the speed of their rotation into and out of the sun and apparently these speeds vary hugely.

On Mercury the interval between each sunrise is 176 earth days.  Pluto’s day is about the length of 6 earth days, but it spins in the opposite direction, i.e. the sun rises in the west and sets in the east!  Jupiter has the shortest day, just less than ten of our hours.  And amazingly, the planet Venus has days that are longer than its years; a day on Venus is about 243 earth days; yet a single year is 224.7. The difference here on our beautiful blue planet is, of course, that the days here have been set in order by the great creator God for our benefit. In his great love for us he has designed our very special planet to revolve at just the right speed so that our day and night measure 24 hours. During this period of time the whole surface of earth is exposed to sunlight and darkness, and so morning comes soon here on this blue jewel, and our alarm clocks herald it each morning.

As the scripture above points out, with every dawn the mercy and compassion of God is renewed for us—we are given a brand new day, a new beginning, a fresh start, a clean slate. Isn’t it just great that our days are not as long as some of the other planets in our solar system?

For us, tomorrow is just a few hours away and at each sunrise this wonderful promise kicks in. This is God’s morning greeting for each of his children! We really need to awake praising our God for this amazing gift, this fruitful blessing that we don’t deserve!

Prayer
Our amazing loving Father, thank you for the special morning blessing which you bestow upon us as we wake. Help us to rise singing your praises, and begin to understand just how long, how wide and how deep your love is for each of us, because of your mercy.
Amen
