Geography Is A Flavour

“For we are to God the fragrance of Christ…”
2 Corinthians 2:15 (NKJV)

Following on from “Geography is a flavour”, the Starbucks Coffee Company says, “You can tell a lot about coffee if you know where it’s from, because every bean has a distinctive flavour particular to its land of origin.” And if you are a serious coffee drinker you will realise that this is really true. All the finest coffee in the world is grown between the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn. These two imaginary lines define the coffee belt, where soil, temperature, rainfall and other elements form the perfect environment for coffee trees to flourish.

Combined with flavour, each coffee also has a fragrance.  I’m sure you’ve experienced this by just walking past a coffee shop in a town centre. Fragrance is an amazing thing; it can conjure up scenes from the past that we associate with a certain aroma and as far as flowers are concerned, they have a fragrance all of their own. In fact every flower can be identified by the way it smells and some experts can identify thousands of flowers just by their perfume alone!

The Apostle Paul tells Christians that they too have a fragrance, a perfume, an aroma that identifies us as followers of Jesus because we carry the knowledge of him to others.

In the Messiah, in Christ, God leads us from place to place in one perpetual victory parade. The Message version of 2 Corinthians 2:15-16 says, “Through us, he brings knowledge of Christ. Everywhere we go, people breathe in the exquisite fragrance. Because of Christ, we give off a sweet scent rising to God, which is recognised by those on the way of salvation—an aroma redolent with life.” So, the gospel message that we carry is like a fragrant bouquet of exciting blooms which identify Jesus as the one who gives eternal life to his followers. Today He is still tenderly reaching out to every one we meet and repeating those words he used centuries ago when he called the disciples—“Follow me!”

Can you smell the exciting and fragrant aroma of salvation today?

Gracious Father, thanks to you for this heady perfume of salvation that we are privileged to carry about in our lives. May it be recognised by everyone with whom we share the knowledge of Jesus your Son.
