Worshipping In Spirit And In Truth

“Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshippers the Father seeks.  God is spirit, and his worshippers must worship in spirit and in truth.”
John 4:23-24 (NIV)

True worship is not something we work up of ourselves or do from our own strength.  Rather it involves the Holy Spirit living in us.  And the phrase “worshipping in truth” also links it back to Jesus Christ, who said, “I am the truth” (John 14:6).  So as Christ lives in us through the Holy Spirit then we worship in spirit and truth!

Romans 12:1 says, “Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God – this is your spiritual act of worship.”  Worshipping in spirit is about our whole lives, devoted in sacrificial love to God and other people.  And the way we become living sacrifices is also through Jesus Christ, by the one who was the ultimate sacrifice living in and through us.  The more we submit to Christ and the lead of the Holy Spirit in our lives, the more our lives will be worshipping in Spirit and in truth.  The very source of love lives in and through us expressed in worshipful lives of love and service.

The response to God’s incredible love for us, prompted by Jesus Christ himself through the Holy Spirit, is to worship enthusiastically with our whole lives, our whole hearts and minds and love and strength.  And “enthusiasm” comes from the Greek “en theo” meaning God within.  So when we are truly enthusiastic about something in the literal sense of the word it’s because it is motivated by God living within us.

Let’s submit to Jesus Christ and worship in spirit and in truth!

Father in heaven, help us to worship enthusiastically in spirit and in truth through your son living in us by the Holy Spirit.
