Designer Planet

“Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation?”
Job 38:4 (NIV)

I wonder if you have ever considered the fact that our home, this beautiful blue jewel we live on—planet earth—was designed specifically for the habitation of human beings. Not only does it contain all the special ingredients for our survival but it also has a great deal for us to enjoy as well. As we take just a little peek at a few of those things here; I’m sure you will breathe a sigh of gratitude to the Designer.

Our home hurtles through space at 67,000 mph, completing 580 million miles around the sun every year; carrying on its surface vegetable, animal and human life. The mass and size of earth is just right; if it were greater it would double the weight of air and with twice as much oxygen the amount of water would be greatly increased; so much so that the entire surface would be one great ocean. The earth’s tilt and rotation are just right; as you know it is tilted at an angle of 23.5 degrees from the perpendicular which gives us seasons for sowing and reaping. It rotates at the speed of 1040 mph towards the east and makes one complete revolution every 24 hours in its trip around the sun. The result is that the earth’s crust is evenly heated—like a chicken on a spit—if it revolved slower or faster some places would be scorched, others bitterly cold. Our distance from the sun is just right; 93 million miles; any closer we’d fry and any further away we’d freeze, 5% closer and the temperature would be 900F and 1% further away the surface would be total ice. It’s the sun that lifts the water from the oceans in the form of vapour and makes rainfall possible and its power also drives the winds to carry rain clouds.

Then there’s photosynthesis that enables plants to manufacture organic food from carbon dioxide, while the ozone layer protects us from ultra violet rays. Each pinch of soil contains a microscopic world of billions of micro organisms which continually rejuvenate the earth. Another special feature is, of course, water—without it earth would be lifeless.  Water also has a very special feature—it freezes from the top down, the other way around and all life in lakes and ponds would perish. What about sunrises and sunsets and what about the blue sky? It’s only the dust in the atmosphere that produces these wonderful colours for us to enjoy; if it were absent the sky would be black permanently!

And there’s so much more to ponder!  As Johannes Kepler (1571-1630), the German astronomer once wrote; “God has passed before me in the grandeur of His ways. Glorify Him, ye stars in your ineffable language, and thou, my soul, praise Him!

Glory to God who has permitted me to catch a glimpse of the skirts of his garments!
(Sir Isaac Newton 1642-1726)

What a marvellous planet we live on, and thanks, Cliff, for bringing to our attention these interesting facts. As it says in Isaiah 6:3, “…The whole earth is full of His glory.” Many still think that what we have inherited happened as a result of blind chance, but the facts that you brought out loudly proclaim the existence of an all wise, all powerful God. Many thanks for an inspiring article.
