The ‘Thinkable’

“No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come.”
Mark 13:32-33 (NIV)

A true story about 9/11 is described in Amanda Ripley’s collection of stories, The Unthinkable. It tells of Rick Rescorla, who was head of security for Morgan Stanley and a decorated soldier in the Vietnam War. He made it a point to drill all the Morgan Stanley staff to prepare for any unexpected attack which he thought could take place where they worked  in one of the Twin Towers. He regularly went through the rehearsal of what to do if the unthinkable occurred. He made it a point that guests for training courses at Morgan Stanley also knew about the procedure. The principle behind his training was expressed through his military experience—‘prior, proper, planning and preparation prevents poor performance’.

On the day of 9/11, the staff of Morgan Stanley were in the second tower to be hit by an aeroplane. They responded by putting into practise what they had been taught. By the time the building collapsed 13 employees remained in the building whilst 2,687 had  gotten out safely.

Jesus Christ’s return is not an unthinkable event. Jesus said that he is coming soon (Revelation 3:11). It is a question of when, not if. We do not know the date. In the remaining time till that ‘thinkable’ event, we are to properly plan and prepare daily so that we are ready.

Thank you, Father, that Jesus will return in glory to fully usher in your Kingdom.  Although we don’t know the date, help us to plan properly to be ready for when he comes.
