As Faithful As The Moon

“My covenant I will not break…It shall be established forever like the moon, even like the faithful witness in the sky.”
Psalm 89:34, 37 (NKJV)

Early one morning about a month ago I pulled back my bedroom curtains and gasped as I was confronted with a big bright, glowing full moon. In fact, I was so inspired that I ran and got my camera and took a photo of this beautiful companion of the night in the western sky. I find it very satisfying to enjoy this very close neighbour during the daytime. But it is a bit confusing when we realise that this huge moon was created to rule the night by reflecting the light of the sun down upon us here on earth. (Genesis 1:16).

So why is it hanging around in the daytime?  Well, apparently the moon is visible overhead at some point in every twenty-four hours, but we aren’t looking for it and just don’t notice it. But if we take the time to scan the sky during the daylight hours we can easily spot it smiling down on us. In some ways this is just like God because even when we think He isn’t thinking about us—He is! Even when we don’t think He is around—He is! He is always smiling, inspiring, protecting, caring, loving and providing for us; his beloved children.

David really understood this and wrote about it in Psalm 139; we’re just going to look at some verses here from the New Living Version:
O Lord you have examined my heart and know everything about me. You know when I sit down or stand up. You know my every thought when far away. You chart the path ahead of me and tell me where to stop and rest. Every moment you know where I am.” (Verses 1-3).
If I ride the wings of the morning, if I dwell by the furthest oceans, even there your hand will guide me, and your strength will support me. I could ask the darkness to hide me and the light around me to become night—but even in darkness I cannot hide from you. To you the night shines as bright as day. Darkness and light are both alike to you.” (Verses 9-12).
How precious are your thoughts about me, O God! They are innumerable! I can’t even count them; they outnumber the grains of sand! And when I wake in the morning, you are still with me!” (Verses 17-18).

This is a great psalm to meditate on day or night.  And perhaps the next time that we see the moon looking down on us during the day we’ll smile and think about our Father.

Gentle Father, help me to realise that your tender concern always enfolds me like a beautiful garment, and that night and day your thoughts about me are innumerable—thank you!
